Knaphill’s 2-0 over Feltham at Redding Way on Saturday, put them joint leaders with Hanworth Villa in Division 1, and made it four straight wins in their flying start to the new season. They could have at least doubled the score had other goal scoring opportunities not been spurned. But the team have been gelling well and this result was still one well worthy of maximum points.

With the heat of a rare hot sunny afternoon, the football was played at a fair pace with Knaphill playing the better football in a first half that produced two goals. Early chances fell to both teams, but the home side were looking the sharpest when challenging for the ball and producing some neat passing.

Neil Roissetter, with better timing might have paid dividends, but he saw one effort fired over the top of goal and the other wide of the far post. Knaphill then took the initiative after 20 minutes when the midfield dynamo Ian Savage unleashed the perfect strike which nestled in the far corner of goal from 20 yards.

Then six minutes later, it should have been goal number two, but somehow Matt Miller skied the ball over when it looked easier to score in front of a gapping goal. Ricky Hogsden then had a header go wide of the post after 27 minutes.

There were opportunities at the other end too, the best for Feltham came in the 39th minute when they were awarded a penalty when Greenwood obstructed a Feltham player in the box. Richard Shelley made a fine save from Crane’s spot kick, which was parried out and pounced on by Baxter who brought out another good save from the Knaphill keeper.

Whilst that save kept Knaphill’s lead intact, within 90 seconds Knaphill went two up. A pass from Dave Stevens found Matt Baker who had the easiest of tap ins from close range to make it 2-0, his eighth goal of the season.

The second half produced opportunities at both ends as Knaphill still showed confidence in their play, and Feltham’s chances of getting back into the game faded as the half wore on as Knaphill kept in control and even had another chance to extend their lead.

A raking pass from Savage found Miller, but it was a tame effort that left him annoyed at his lack of power on the shot. Substitute Orando Pike also had a chance to extend the lead but his scuffed shot just went past the far post. Despite continuing to press for another goal, Knaphill were satisfied with the final scoreline and finish the afternoon joint top of the pack with Hanworth Villa in Division One.

Knaphill produced an excellent all round performance in Monday’s encounter against leaders Hanworth Villa, to make it six points gained from their two Bank Holiday weekend games. Hanworth came to Redding Way top of Division 1, three wins and a draw from their opening games, but departed having seen Knaphill inflict them with their first defeat of the season.

Knaphill were forced to make a couple of changes to the side that won at CB Hounslow at the weekend with Gary Campbell replacing Kevin Ross at right back and Ian Savage replacing Brian Murphy in midfield.

Both teams served up some good football to entertain the spectators, but the home side can certainly take the match day honours from their confident defending, creative midfield and sharpness with passing and distribution.

Manager Bob Pritchard said in his programme notes that the game would be a stiff test for his side and despite being only three games into the season, it would be a good indicator of our progress to date. That it certainly was, with all the players giving a positive display.

Early chances fell to striker Matt Baker, but he had to wait until the 26th minute for his goal. From a threaded pass by David Stevens, Baker’s one on one with the keeper resulted in a well taken goal, his seventh of the season to make it 1-0.

Knaphill continued to move the ball around well as they pressed for a second, whilst the visitors were playing their part in keeping the game flowing well, but their opportunities to get an equaliser were denied. Shortly before the break, Knaphill’s Ricky Hogsden looked well placed for a possible second goal, but his effort went across goal and swerved past the far post.

Continuing to play as a well organised unit in the second half, Knaphill increased their lead after 59 minutes through Ricky Hogsden who diverted it into the back of the net following an effort from Dave Stevens. Then in the 70th minute, Shelley was to deny the visitors a chance to pull one back when he saved well from Reed.

The confidence shown in Knaphill’s play, was to prove that Hanworth were not going to be allowed a passage back into the game and held onto their two goal lead for a very worthy three points.

Scorers: Baker 26mins, Hogsden 59mins
Bookings: Roissetter

Team: Richard Shelley, Gary Campbell, Gavin Brainch, Lee Crozier, Jason Greenwood, Neil Roissetter(Matt Edwards), Ian Savage(Brian Murphy), Matt Miller, Dave Stevens, Ricky Hogsden, Matt Baker(Simon Hughes)

When the two sides met at Osterley Sports Ground last season, Knaphill let a lead slip to see their opponents snatch a late winner. This time, Knaphill reversed the outcome when they battled back from 2-1 down to secure maximum points in this 3-2 win, and continue their unbeaten start to the season.

With the first half goalless, this Division 1 encounter brought out a more inspiring performance from both sides in the second period. Whilst the home side were getting rather agitated in the way they were playing in the first half, Knaphill were more composed in their passing and creativity, although lacking a decisive cutting edge in the final finish.

After just four minutes, Matt Baker netted with a header, but was ajudged offside. Then at the other end the home side squandered an early opportunity. Two chances then followed for Knaphill, Baker headed just over and Brian Murphy’s effort from 30 yards veered past the post.

Although the Hounslow defence were looking vunerable from pressure, the final point of accuracy from the visitors, diminished the chances of opening the scoring. Two minutes before halftime, Ricky Hogsden forced a good save out of keeper Conybear from 35 yards, which was turned away for a corner.

A goal that was much needed in the first 45 minutes, came within two minutes of the second half, when Baker capitalised on a mistake by the keeper to put Knaphill into the lead. CB Hounslow then struck with an equaliser after 55 minutes when Edwards cracking shot from 22 yards gave Shelley no chance in the visitors goal.

This spurred the home side on and began to put Knaphill’s defence into retreat for a short spell. After seeing one effort glance off the bar, their sharper approach began to pay dividends in the 61st minute when Minkton put them in front.

Trailing 2-1, Knaphill then produced an inspiring last twenty minutes and forced their way back into the game. On one swift break, the speedy Simon Hughes had the better of a defender, slipped the ball to Baker who made no mistake to slot home making it 2-2 in the 77th minute. It was Baker who had a golden chance to secure a third soon after, but fired over from close range.

However, determination from Knaphill brought about the winning goal. Baker had his effort blocked by the keeper, the ball came out to David Stevens who neatly tucked it away for the third goal and maximum points to keep Knaphill in the top six.

Now it’s onto Bank Holiday Monday and the visit of leaders Hanworth Villa to Redding Way.

Team: Richard Shelley, Kevin Ross(Gary Campbell), Gavin Brainch, Lee Crozier, Jason Greenwood, Brian Murphy(Simon Hughes), Matt Miller, Neil Roissetter, Dave Stevens, Ricky Hogsden, Matt Baker

Knaphill produced some positive, fluent and attacking football including a hat-trick for Matt Baker, as they gained maximum points in the convincing 5-1 win over Worcester Park at Redding Way on Saturday.

Knaphill couldn’t have wished for a better start, when after just two minutes they took the lead. David Stevens floated over a fine cross and Matt Baker planted a firm header past Williams in the visitors goal. Minutes later, Baker fed the perfect ball through to Ricky Hogsden, whose effort was parried by the keeper, trickled towards the near post and pushed away for a corner.

Then after 17 minutes, it was Hogsden, proving a lively wire up front, who won a race towards goal with a defender attempting to close him down, but the Knaphill newcomer had that extra edge to slip the ball past his opponent and the keeper to make it 2-0.

With Knaphill continuing to spray the ball around, sharp and precise passing putting their opponents on the back foot in those early stages. But it wasn’t all one way for the home side as the visitors threatened a few times in the first half hour and squandered a couple of opportunities. However, a bit of hesitancy in the home defence allowed Petruzzcielo through to slip the ball past Shelley to reduce the arrears after 27 minutes.

On 32 minutes Knaphill’s two goal lead was restored when Ian Savage, making his league debut for the club, threaded a perfect pass through to Baker who coolly slotted home. Shortly before the goal, Knaphill were denied what appeared a certain penalty when Nick Darnell was floored in the box. Several moves were to continued to stem from Knaphill’s midfield controlled by Savage, as Knaphill went in search of another goal.

Worcester Park launched a couple of dangerous attacks, one of them seeing an effort denied by Shelley in the home goal. Then just on the stroke of halftime, Knaphill stretched their lead when Brian Murphy was fouled in the box, and Baker stepped up to fire home with fine aplomb to make it 4-1 and secure his hat-trick.

Park still found space and effort to trouble Knaphill on occasions in the second half, but Shelley brought off three excellent saves to keep them at bay. At the other end, Baker heading towards goal, was to see his rasping shot turned over the bar by the keeper. Knaphill still pursued a fifth goal but had to wait until late in the half.

Still staying in control, Knaphill then rounded off a good afternoon’s performance in the 82nd minute. Matt Miller was fouled in the box, and Savage fired home from the spot with sheer simplicity for a final 5-1 scoreline.

Saturday 9th August 2008

New season and new faces heralded the start of Knaphill’s second campaign in the Combined Counties League on Saturday. They opened their Division 1 programme with a mixed blend of last season’s squad and seven new signings in the starting line up for the encounter against Coulsdon United at Redding Way.

Knaphill got off to a bright start, setting out to steal an early lead with some fast direct attacking football. The best effort came after ten minutes when Ricky Hogsden, making his Knaphill debut, brought out a fine save from Polley the Coulsdon keeper, pushing the shot away for a corner. But a minute later he could do nothing about the next strike that came his way, as newcomer Nick Darnell stole into the 18 yard box to hammer home to give Knaphil a deserved lead.

Quick tackling, good movement on the break had Knaphill getting the upper hand of the early proceedings, whilst the visitors were pegged back from any serious threat. After 18 minutes Knaphill increased their lead as Matt Baker faced a one on one with the Coulsdon keeper and waltzed past him to slot home to make it 2-0.

Midway through the first half Coulsdon began to get more into the game and reduced the deficit when Hills found a gap in the home defence to fire past Shelley. Just before halftime, Orando Pike opened his account for the season, notching Knaphill’s third to restore their two goal lead.

The second half saw Knaphill let their grip on the game start to slip allowing Coulsdon to penetrate the home defence which brought two goals in the space of five minutes. Hills got their second goal after 53 minutes to put them back in the game which they enhanced on in the 57th minute through Anderson who made it 3-3.

Although further goal scoring opportunities came and went, both teams had to settle for a point, but for Knaphill the result was a similar situation in the opening game last season when they also squandered a 3-1 lead to finish with a 3-3 draw. This Saturday Knaphill play hosts to Worcester Park at Redding Way kick-off 3pm.

Scorers: Darnell 11mins, Baker 23mins, Pike 44mins

Team: Shelley, Ross, Baldwin(Pritchard), Lloyd, Crozier, Pike, Murphy(Roissetter), Darnell, Stevens(Mercer), Hogsden, Baker
